About the System
What Is ForeScan3D
ForeScan3D is a system designed for 3D documentation of the human body surface, primarily for forensic practice and forensic medicine. It creates a digital record for use in expert reports and 3D documentation of deceased persons and can be used for photogrammetry in forensic medicine. The system creates an accurate, textured 3D model that can be viewed, measured, annotated, archived and used as a basis for documentation, expert evaluation or reporting. ForeScan3D reduces dependence on the individual photographer’s approach and creates a standardised digital record of the condition of the body surface. The system is developed and manufactured by AUREL CZ s.r.o.
The data remain available even if the condition of the body changes or it is no longer possible to return to its original state.
ForeScan3D allows users to revisit a case, take measurements, add annotations and use the outputs for documentation or reporting.
Who ForeScan3D Is Designed For
Forensic Medicine
Standardised documentation of the body surface prior to autopsy, a measurable record of injuries and the ability to revisit a case even after it has been closed.
Pathology
A digital record of external findings for archiving, expert consultation and completion of documentation.
Forensic Institutes
A consistent and repeatable documentation format for expert reports, teaching and professional presentations.
Sustainabilityt
Long-term archiving without dependence on a physical specimen. The optimised model reduces storage requirements and data management costs.
Typical Applications
How It Works
The basic process is designed to be simple and repeatable for the operator.
Step-by-Step Process:
Preparation
The body is placed on an autopsy or examination table. The scanning unit is moved into position next to the table, connected to the power supply, and a calibration target is placed near the head of the body.
The system is mobile within the facility. The operator manually moves it to the examination table, positions the calibration target and starts the process from the control interface. The system is not designed as a handheld or field scanner.
Automatic Scanning
The scanning unit calibrates itself automatically and scans the visible surface of the body. A full-body scan in a single position typically takes 10–15 minutes.
The scanner captures only the surfaces within its field of view. It therefore documents the body surface in its current position. To document the other side of the body, the body must be turned over and an additional scan performed.
Processing
Model processing typically takes 10 minutes, depending on hardware performance. The result is a textured 3D model. An optimised model for routine use is approximately 200 MB in size.
The processed 3D model serves as a digital record of the findings that can be revisited at any time. Users can view, measure and annotate the model and use it for documentation, reporting, expert consultation, archiving or teaching.
Benefits for the Facility and Working with Outputs
Standardised Documentation
Reduces dependence on the individual photographer’s approach and creates a consistent digital record.
Ability to Revisit the Case
The model can be revisited after the autopsy has been completed or at a later date to take additional measurements.
Measurements in the 3D Model
Allows measurements to be taken directly within the digital environment.
Detailed Texture
Allows retrospective assessment of surface features such as injuries, puncture marks or tattoos.
Archiving and Sharing
The optimised 3D model reduces data storage requirements and makes sharing, viewing and long-term archiving easier.
Simple Workflow
The system is easy to operate and does not require extensive training.
ForeScan3D and Other Documentation Methods
ForeScan3D does not replace autopsy or any established documentation method. It complements them in situations where photography, CT or handheld scanning are insufficient. It captures the condition of the body surface as a measurable 3D model. The overview shows what each method can achieve and where its limitations lie.
Photographs capture the body from a single angle and without a built-in scale reference, and the result depends on the photographer’s approach. Dimensions can only be estimated from a photograph and require a scale to be included in the image.
ForeScan3D creates a measurable, textured 3D model in which measurements can be taken and which can be revisited at any time. Subtle surface findings that can easily be missed in photographs – such as a small puncture mark next to a pigmented skin lesion – can be identified retrospectively in the textured model.
CT is indispensable for internal findings – it can locate a projectile, fractures or bleeding before the autopsy and helps identify where to focus the examination.
ForeScan3D documents the body surface with a colour texture at a level of detail that CT does not provide: the colour of a haematoma, the shape of an abrasion or the pattern of a tattoo. Removed or faded tattoos that are no longer visible to the naked eye may still be identifiable in the textured scan.
A fraction of the purchase and operating cost of CT (approx. CZK 8 million), with no ionising radiation and no need for a radiographer. Accessible even to facilities for which CT is not a viable option.
Handheld 3D scanners are suitable for smaller objects, specific areas of the body or selected details. Their use generally requires an experienced operator with knowledge of the specific system, making the results more dependent on the operator.
ForeScan3D is designed for automated and standardised documentation of the body, reducing the need for specialist operators and improving process repeatability. A full-body scan in a single position takes 10–15 minutes, with no need to calibrate the scanner before each use.
A specialised system for documenting the body surface in forensic medicine and pathology. An automated scan with colour texture and accuracy according to VDI/VDE 2634-1 of 98% ≤ 1.0 mm (n = 10) is produced using a standardised process and remains available for future reference for measurements, review of findings and professional presentations.
